Anaozumi claims third career title at Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament
The championship was decided on the final day of the tournament in Aichi Prefecture, with Anaozumi also receiving the Skill Prize.
Sekiwake Anaozumi secured his third career championship title at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on 26 July 2026. The victory was determined in a three-way playoff against Ozeki Kirishima and Sekiwake Atamiyama, who both concluded the tournament with a 12-3 record.
Anaozumi claimed the title on the final day, known as senshuraku, of the event held in Aichi Prefecture. This marks his third tournament victory of the year and his third overall, following his first win earlier in 2026. The win comes three tournaments after his previous title.
In addition to the championship, Anaozumi was awarded the Skill Prize, or Gino-sho. Sekiwake Atamiyama received the Fighting Prize, or Kanto-sho. The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament is one of the six annual honbasho, or major tournaments, held in Japan.
Concurrently, the Juryo division title was won by Shonanonomi following a four-way playoff. In related developments, former maeguchi wrestler Otokamaru held a press conference on the same day, stating he felt he had done his best before retiring.
The sporting events occurred on the same day that the Niigata Regional Meteorological Observatory issued a Level 4 landslide disaster warning for Nagaoka City, Kashiwazaki City, and Kariwa Village. The warning was issued at 08:15 local time, while the sumo tournament concluded later in the day.
