AMD to bring World Labs into its AI research push
Fei-Fei Li is set to become AMD’s executive vice-president and chief scientist under the agreement, which remains subject to regulatory approval.
World Labs has signed a definitive agreement to join AMD, bringing the AI research group closer to the chipmaker’s hardware and compute operations. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
World Labs said in its announcement that Fei-Fei Li will become an AMD executive vice-president and chief scientist, working directly with chief executive Lisa Su. Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall are to continue leading the World Labs team.
Founded in 2024, World Labs focuses on AI for spatial and physical-world problems. The company said it began a technical partnership with AMD last year, working on model training and inference optimisation on AMD GPUs.
The companies said they aim to build an open AI ecosystem spanning hardware, software, platforms and widely accessible models. No transaction value or other financial terms were provided.
