Atletico Madrid director Mateu Alemany met with Arsenal counterparts in London last week to discuss a potential transfer. The meeting confirmed that the Gunners are poised to sign Alvarez if he changes his mind, with Atletico demanding a fee of 150 million euros (£128m). Arsenal have stepped up their efforts regarding the striker following the extension of Vinicius Jr’s contract at Real Madrid, which removed a competing priority for the London club.
Well-placed sources indicate a slight softening of Alvarez’s stance towards an Arsenal move in recent days, though not enough to excite the club yet. The striker has been made aware of visa regulations that would create difficulty for his family visiting him in the UK, a factor that may influence his decision. However, he remains reluctant to forgo his dream of joining Barcelona, leaving his future uncertain ahead of deadline day.
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo stated he is sure Alvarez will win over the fans in two games and insisted the player is an important part of the team. Cerezo’s comments come as the club maintains its position that Alvarez is not for sale to Barcelona, a stance that has been publicly contentious since May. The Madrid club previously mocked Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez via social media posts, further complicating the diplomatic landscape of the transfer.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City for £81m in August 2024. Since then, he has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances but has not yet won any silverware with the club. His agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has expressed disdain towards how his client has been treated this summer, suggesting the player believes the Madrid club are being unreasonable in their refusal to allow a move.
