Alonso targets Henderson and Welbeck to bolster Chelsea’s youthful squad

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has identified Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson and Brighton forward Danny Welbeck as potential summer targets, aiming to inject experience into a squad that has recently undergone significant turnover. The reports, described as "shock targets," suggest Alonso is prioritising veteran presence as he begins his tenure at the club.
Henderson, 36, is reportedly receptive to a transfer to Chelsea, with former Liverpool captain Fabrizio Romano confirming the midfielder’s interest. The move would allow Henderson to work under Alonso, whom he has expressed a desire to collaborate with, and to help lead a dressing room that Alonso has described as inexperienced.
The midfielder’s potential return to West London is facilitated by his current status at Brentford. After joining the Bees on a free transfer from Ajax, Henderson made 32 Premier League appearances last season. Brentford are prepared to allow him to leave as a free agent this summer, with relations between the player and the club remaining strong.
Henderson’s appeal to Chelsea extends beyond his on-field capabilities. He maintains close personal relationships with several figures in the Chelsea setup, most notably Morgan Rogers, the club’s new record recruit. Rogers, who has agreed a £117m deal from Aston Villa, is scheduled to return from the 2026 World Cup before completing his move to Stamford Bridge.
Concurrently, Chelsea are monitoring Brighton forward Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old, who scored 13 league goals last season, is also reportedly open to a transfer. Welbeck has 12 months remaining on his contract, adding a layer of complexity to any potential negotiation with Brighton.
Alonso’s appointment marks a formal shift in Chelsea’s leadership structure. Following a defeat in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday, the club confirmed on Sunday morning that Alonso had agreed a four-year contract. He is set to officially replace interim manager Calum McFarlane on 1 July, bringing a new strategic direction to the club’s recruitment and squad development.
The focus on Henderson and Welbeck contrasts with Chelsea’s recent record-breaking investment in Rogers. While Rogers represents a long-term midfield anchor, the interest in established veterans suggests Alonso is looking to stabilise the squad’s leadership and tactical maturity ahead of the new season.
Henderson’s career statistics underscore his experience, having made 463 Premier League appearances. He captained Liverpool to the 2019/20 title, winning eight trophies over 12 seasons at Anfield. This summer, he also made history as the first Englishman to feature at four World Cup tournaments.
