Algeria severs diplomatic ties with UAE over alleged hostile actions
Algiers has given the UAE ambassador 48 hours to comply with the decision, after declaring efforts to preserve bilateral ties exhausted.
Algeria has announced it is severing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing what Algerian state media described as “provocative and hostile actions” by the Gulf state.
Algiers said all means of preserving bilateral ties had been exhausted. The UAE ambassador to Algeria has been given 48 hours to comply with the decision, according to Algerian state media reports cited by France 24.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has previously accused the UAE of meddling in Algeria’s internal affairs and seeking to destabilise the country. Algerian media have also accused Abu Dhabi of contributing to regional discord.
Tensions increased in February, when Algeria began the process of cancelling a 2013 air-services agreement with the UAE. Tebboune has said Algeria’s relations with other Gulf states remained warm while making veiled criticism of the UAE.
The president previously said a diplomatic break had been avoided to prevent deeper divisions in the Arab world. The UAE Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the full legal and practical implementation of Algeria’s decision was not provided.
