The Alabama Crimson Tide have identified their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, with head coach Kalen DeBoer selecting sophomore Keelon Russell to lead the offence. The decision was communicated to the squad on Saturday, effectively ending a competitive battle that spanned the spring game and the entirety of fall camp.
Russell, a five-star recruit ranked No. 2 overall in the 2025 class by 247Sports, has emerged as the preferred option over senior Austin Mack. The announcement comes two weeks before the team’s season opener against East Carolina on 5 September, providing a clear focal point for the programme’s final preparation period.
The selection process was heavily influenced by Russell’s performance in the spring game, where he threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns. In contrast, Mack managed 101 yards during the same contest and was described as being “dinged up,” a factor that likely contributed to the coaching staff’s confidence in Russell’s durability and capability.
Russell’s path to the starting role has been defined by patience and development. He appeared in two games during the 2025 season, completing 11 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns before opting to redshirt. His emergence follows the departure of former starter Ty Simpson, who was selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the 13th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Mack, who will remain in a backup capacity, spent the previous season playing behind Simpson. He appeared in four games last year, completing 24 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns. While his experience is notable, the coaching staff has prioritised Russell’s potential and recent performance metrics for the lead signal-caller position.
The decision underscores the Crimson Tide’s focus on integrating high-profile recruits into the starting lineup. With Russell now confirmed as the starter, the team’s offensive structure is set to centre on his abilities as they prepare for the season’s first fixture.
