Al Hilal secure Summerville as Saudi football strategy shifts focus to Riyadh
The Saudi Pro League club’s board, chaired by Prince Nawaf bin Saad, finalised the acquisition of Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United, a move that effectively ended the player’s potential transfer to AS Roma.
Al Hilal have officially completed the signing of Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United, securing the player on a four-year contract. The transaction, valued at £55 million with an additional £10 million in potential bonuses, represents a significant financial commitment by the Saudi Pro League club and marks a decisive shift in the player’s career trajectory.
The agreement was announced by the board of directors of Al-Hilal Club Company, chaired by His Highness Prince Nawaf bin Saad. The board’s statement confirmed the acquisition of the 2001-born midfielder, who had been a prominent target for several European clubs. The financial package offered by Al Hilal was sufficient to convince West Ham to sell their star player, overturning a situation where Summerville was reportedly one step away from finalising a move to AS Roma.
Summerville’s decision to join the Riyadh-based club rather than the Italian side has been met with a calculated public relations campaign by Al Hilal. The club utilised social media platforms to celebrate the signing, releasing videos that deliberately provoked the Roman club. By subverting the well-known proverb “All roads lead to Rome,” Al Hilal posted the phrase “All roads lead to Al Riyadh,” highlighting the player’s choice to relocate to Saudi Arabia.

Despite AS Roma’s persistent pursuit of the Dutch talent, the substantial monetary offer from Al Hilal proved decisive.
