The US Coast Guard has dispatched air and surface crews to search near Nantucket after losing contact with a Canadian-registered air ambulance travelling from Bermuda to Boston.

The Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard early on Saturday. Skyport, the operator of Bermuda’s airport, said four crew members and two passengers were aboard the Gulfstream jet.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft descending about 13,000 feet in roughly two minutes shortly before contact was lost. Air traffic control audio reportedly captures a controller confirming the pilot was declaring an emergency, but the pilot’s transmission is inaudible. The cause of the descent and loss of contact has not been established.

Canada’s transport minister, Steven MacKinnon, said four Canadians were on board. Bermuda’s government said it was in contact with US authorities and the passengers’ families.

The aircraft is registered to Ontario-based Latitude Air Ambulance, which provides medical evacuation services. The search was continuing, with no report on the aircraft’s location or the six people’s condition.
