Afghan women’s healthcare struggle documented in new report
Mélanie Nunes’s investigative report follows women seeking care and female healthcare providers trying to deliver it.
French filmmaker and journalist Mélanie Nunes has spoken to FRANCE 24 about her investigative report, “Afghanistan: The Unsung Female Carers”, which examines women’s efforts to access healthcare and the work of female providers trying to offer services.
The short-form documentary follows both patients and healthcare workers, presenting their experiences as a connected account of access to care and the people attempting to sustain it.
Nunes said participants agreed to take part because “nobody cares about what they think” in Afghanistan. The statement was made in the context of the documentary and reflects the participants’ reported motivation for speaking to the filmmakers.
The report was recently released on the Arte television channel. FRANCE 24 published its interview with Nunes on 10 September 2026.
