The Las Vegas Aces have secured their eighth consecutive WNBA playoff appearance, extending a streak that dates back to their second season in the city. The defending champions clinched the berth on Thursday with an 83-76 victory over the Washington Mystics, moving to third place in the league standings with a record of 24-11.
Jackie Young led the offensive effort for Las Vegas, recording a season-high 32 points and five assists. Her performance offset a difficult outing from key teammates A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray, who combined for just 6-of-24 shooting from the field. The win marked the Aces’ second home victory over the Mystics in three days, following a triumph on Tuesday.
Despite the playoff qualification, the path to a fourth title in four years presents significant structural challenges. The Minnesota Lynx currently lead the standings at 28-7, followed by the Golden State Valkyries at 24-9. Oddsmakers have positioned the Lynx as favourites to claim the championship, offering odds of approximately even money for their first title since 2017.
The Aces’ current position is precarious, with nine games remaining in the regular season. The Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever are both two games behind Las Vegas, competing for the No. 3 seed. Securing a higher playoff position remains the immediate priority for the team as they navigate the final stretch of the campaign.
This season has mirrored the volatility of the previous year, where the Aces started with a 14-14 record before winning 16 consecutive games to capture their third championship in four years. While the roster retains its core identity, the competitive landscape has shifted, with the Lynx and Valkyries establishing themselves as the primary contenders for the league’s top spot.
