Abreu Ends 20-Game Drought as Red Sox Sweep Orioles
Payton Tolle pitches Boston to 8-0 victory over Baltimore; Abreu’s power returns after months of decline

Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu ended a 20-game home run drought on Wednesday night, hitting a ball over Pesky’s Pole in the third inning during a game against the Baltimore Orioles. The home run marked his first in nearly a month, concluding a stretch that began after a 427-foot shot to the deepest part of Fenway Park on May 8 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Abreu, a World Baseball Classic champion, began the season with significant offensive output, hitting three home runs in the first six games and maintaining an OPS above 1.000 through mid-April. However, his power production has since declined, with the starting right fielder recording just six home runs this season compared to 22 in 115 games last season. He had also maintained a team-high batting average earlier in the year before his power numbers fell.
The Red Sox secured an 8-0 victory over the Orioles at Fenway Park, with Payton Tolle making the starting pitching appearance. Boston’s lineup scored eight runs in five innings, building on an early lead established by Abreu in the first inning. He recorded an RBI single that scored Jarren Duran, giving the Red Sox their first run of the game.
In the third inning, Abreu faced a 1-2 count against the Orioles’ pitcher. After fouling off two offspeed pitches, he connected on the eighth pitch of the at-bat, hitting a high fastball down the right field line. The ball cleared Pesky’s Pole and landed in the right field bleachers, snapping the drought that had persisted since early May.
The victory continues Boston’s home series against Baltimore. The team’s offensive resurgence, highlighted by Abreu’s return to the power column and Tolle’s strong pitching performance, provided a decisive win against the Orioles.
