Aaron Donald’s Rams return leaves Melbourne opener in doubt
The 35-year-old defensive tackle says his body has responded better than expected, but the Rams are preparing for him to play, sit out or take a limited role against the 49ers.
Aaron Donald’s availability for the Los Angeles Rams’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers at Melbourne Cricket Ground remains unresolved, despite the former defensive player of the year reporting a positive response since returning to the team.
Donald, who rejoined the Rams last month after two seasons away from NFL game action, said he was “feeling really good” but that the decision was being assessed day by day. He did not practise on Monday, describing the session as a scheduled rest day.
The 35-year-old said he experienced some rust during 11-on-11 work but believed his movement showed “no drop off” by his assessment. He last played in the Rams’ NFC wild-card loss to the Detroit Lions in January 2024.
The uncertainty has been built into the Rams’ preparation. Defensive coordinator Chris Shula said the team has plans for Donald to play, not play or participate for a limited number of snaps, depending on his readiness.
Donald’s return carries significant expectations. He is a three-time Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, has recorded 111 sacks in 154 regular-season games and has received eight first-team All-Pro selections. His match status and potential workload, however, remain unconfirmed.
