Aaron Donald set to return to field after 981 days as Rams prepare for Giants

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has confirmed he expects to take the field against the New York Giants on Monday night, a move that would mark his return to the NFL after an absence of 981 days. Speaking on Friday, Donald described his availability as "the plan," noting that he has been feeling good after participating in team drills on consecutive days.

Donald’s return follows a period of uncertainty that began when he initially retired in March 2024. He officially came out of retirement on 30 August but did not travel for the Rams’ Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. His participation in back-to-back practice sessions has provided the coaching staff with a clearer picture of his physical readiness for the upcoming contest.

While Donald is optimistic about his role, he acknowledged that his specific snap count remains undecided. He indicated that the coaching staff has a "good game plan" for his involvement, emphasising that he is prepared to play hard and rotate as needed throughout the long season. "Whatever that role is, I'm ready for it," Donald said, expressing excitement about contributing to the team's efforts.

The Rams' preparation for the Week 2 match is not without other concerns, as wide receiver Puka Nacua missed Friday’s practice due to a hip injury. Nacua, who recorded five catches for 74 yards in the team's opening game, was notably absent from the official injury report on Thursday, suggesting the issue is a late development.

Rams head coach Sean McVay had expressed hope on Thursday that Donald would be available for the "Monday Night Football" broadcast. With Donald now confirming his intention to play, the focus shifts to how the veteran defensive tackle’s experience will integrate with the team’s current defensive structure in their bid to improve on their Week 1 performance.
