49ers rookie Stribling silences draft sceptics with exhibition display

The San Francisco 49ers’ decision to select receiver De'Zhaun Stribling with the first pick of the second round in April initially drew scrutiny, with more accomplished college receivers remaining available on the draft board. However, Stribling’s performance in training camp and his subsequent exhibition debut against the Tennessee Titans has reportedly quieted those early criticisms.

During the match on Thursday night, Stribling recorded seven receptions for 63 yards in less than one half of play. His output in the exhibition game surpassed that of Carnell Tate, who was selected fourth overall and stands as the highest-drafted receiver in this year’s class.

Stribling’s involvement began early, catching a six-yard pass on his first snap from quarterback Kurtis Rourke. While he missed a slightly off-target throw on third down and lost five yards on a pop pass earlier in the contest, he stabilised his performance subsequently.

He caught all five targets on his final two drives, including a contested 32-yard reception down the sideline. He also secured an 11-yard catch on third-and-six, breaking a tackle and staying inbounds to set up a touchdown.

Reflecting on the debut, Stribling acknowledged the five receivers drafted ahead of him but emphasised a focus on his individual development. He stated he is concentrating on making the most of his opportunities rather than comparing his progress to his peers.

Before joining the NFL, Stribling played college football at Washington State for two seasons, followed by two years at Oklahoma State, and one season at Ole Miss. At Ole Miss, he recorded 55 catches for 811 yards and six touchdowns, helping the Rebels reach the College Football Playoff semifinals.

The Niners selected Stribling 33rd overall, valuing his ability to create separation in practice. His exhibition performance suggests he is positioning himself for a significant role in the team’s roster as a rookie.
