49ers receiver Pearsall undergoes knee surgery, targets 2027 return

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has undergone surgery to repair the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a move that places him on season-ending injured reserve. The procedure marks a significant setback for the player as he enters the pivotal fourth year of his contract with the club.

Pearsall initially sustained the injury during a Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the previous season, a mishap that cost him participation in 10 games. Following the injury, the team and the player opted against immediate surgical intervention, preferring to pursue rehabilitation and rest to restore full strength.

However, the decision was reversed after Pearsall experienced swelling in the knee during just three training camp practices. The recurrence of symptoms prompted the move to surgery, with the player stating on Instagram that the "road back starts now" and emphasising a focus on mental, physical, and spiritual recovery.

The 49ers have outlined a nine-month recovery period, aiming for Pearsall to return to the field for the start of the 2027 season. This timeline is critical for the organisation, which must evaluate Pearsall’s health and performance when deciding on his fifth-year option next offseason.

Pearsall, a first-round pick from the University of Florida, has played in 20 games across his first three seasons, recording 67 receptions for 928 yards and three touchdowns. His career has been marked by resilience, having previously missed the first six games of his rookie year following a shooting incident in San Francisco.
