Zverev reaches US Open semi-finals after straight-sets win
The French Open champion defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 and will face Karen Khachanov.
Alexander Zverev has reached the US Open men’s semi-finals after defeating Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets.
The German won 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 to reach his third semi-final in New York. He will next face Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a rematch of their Tokyo 2021 Olympic gold-medal match.
Zverev, who was the 2020 US Open runner-up, recovered from an inconsistent start at Flushing Meadows. He said his performance had improved through the tournament and that he was pleased to have reached the last four.
According to Al Jazeera Global News, Zverev has reached the semi-finals at all four majors this year and is the only Grand Slam winner remaining in the men’s draw. The report also said he had recorded 23 Grand Slam match wins in the calendar year, surpassing Boris Becker’s German men’s record of 22 set in 1989.
Zverev is the reigning 2026 French Open champion, having defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli to secure his first Grand Slam title.
