Zverev beats Shelton to win US Open and second Grand Slam title
Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton in four sets to claim his second major title of 2026 and end the American’s bid to win the first Grand Slam by a US man since 2003.
Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to win the US Open men’s singles title, according to France 24.
The victory gave the German his second Grand Slam title after his French Open triumph earlier this year. It also marked a return to the top at Flushing Meadows after he lost the 2020 final to Dominic Thiem.
Shelton was playing in his first Grand Slam final and had been seeking to become the first American man since 2003 to win a major. His campaign included victories over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals and Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals.
Zverev controlled the opening two sets before Shelton fought back in the third, securing his first break of serve and forcing a fourth set. Zverev responded immediately, breaking in the opening game and reasserting control.
He closed out the match after Shelton sent a serve return long on match point, completing Zverev’s second major championship.
