Zheng Qinwen leads US Open quarter-final charge after Swiatek comeback

Zheng Qinwen produced the standout result of the US Open’s latest round, defeating six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek after recovering from 0-5 down in the deciding set, Al Jazeera Global News reported.

The comeback followed a similar recovery against Madison Keys in the previous round. Zheng, who was reported to be managing a chronic elbow injury, is among the women’s quarter-finalists.

Coco Gauff defeated fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 and will meet French Open champion Mirra Andreeva. Gauff is the sixth American player to reach the quarter-finals.

Elena Rybakina beat Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4, despite arriving at the tournament with fitness concerns after retiring from the Cincinnati Open. The result was reported to leave Rybakina one win from becoming world number one, with Zheng next in her draw.

In the men’s tournament, top seed Alexander Zverev defeated Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3). Other reported quarter-finalists included Karen Khachanov, Botic van de Zandschulp and Alexander Blockx.
