Yemen fighting intensifies as Saudi Arabia issues attack alerts
Competing claims over airstrikes and civilian casualties come as the WHO reports more than 1,000 people killed or wounded since 24 August.
Fighting has intensified across Yemen, with the internationally recognised government accusing Houthi forces of killing three children, including an infant, in shelling in Marib. Six other people were reportedly wounded.
The Houthis claimed Saudi forces carried out 54 airstrikes across six provinces over 12 hours, targeting al-Jawf, Marib, Taiz, Hodeidah, Saada and al-Bayda. The competing claims about strikes, casualties and damage have not been independently verified.
Saudi Arabia said Houthi missiles and drones had targeted infrastructure near Khamis Mushait, Abha and Jazan. Its Civil Defense authority issued alerts in Khamis Mushait and Abha, but no casualties were reported in connection with those warnings.
The World Health Organization, cited by Al Jazeera, said clashes had killed or wounded more than 1,000 people and displaced tens of thousands since 24 August. The Houthis also claimed at least 32 people were killed in an attack on a prison in al-Jawf, though that figure remains unverified.
Yemen’s conflict began in 2014 when the Houthis seized Sanaa, followed by a Saudi-led military intervention in 2015. A UN-brokered truce halted large-scale fighting in 2022, but clashes reportedly resumed in July.
