Yemen displacement rises above 200,000 as fighting escalates

The International Organization for Migration says displacement has surged since mid-September, while the World Food Programme warns of widespread hunger in parts of the country.

More than 200,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since fighting escalated in recent weeks, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. Its estimate has risen from 76,000 in mid-September.

The IOM says displacement has been recorded across the country, with Taiz governorate hardest hit. More than 3,700 people have also fled by sea to Djibouti, the agency reported.

The World Food Programme warned on Friday that three in four families in parts of Yemen were going hungry because of the renewed conflict.

The escalation is the most serious since a UN-brokered truce largely halted major cross-border attacks in 2022, according to the source report. Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council announced an offensive on Sunday to retake Houthi-held territory, including Sanaa.
