The left-hander, who has been sidelined for two months with a bone bruise in his pitching elbow, recorded seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk on 57 pitches.

The appearance marks a significant structural shift for the franchise, representing the first time in Yankees history that Fried and ace Gerrit Cole have both been active in the rotation simultaneously. Fried, who finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting last year, had not pitched since May 15. He opted to skip a second scheduled rehab start after allowing two runs in three innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, choosing instead to return ahead of schedule.

Performance metrics from the outing suggest a rapid recovery of his primary tools. Fried’s four-seam fastball averaged 96.2 mph, exceeding his pre-injury average of 94.7 mph in 2026 and his 95.9 mph average in 2025. His 37 per cent whiff rate in the game tied for the 10th best single-game mark for the Yankees this season among pitchers throwing at least 50 pitches.

Gerrit Cole started the first game of the doubleheader, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while allowing three runs. The concurrent availability of Cole and Fried, alongside Cam Schlittler, has created what is described as one of the most formidable pitching trios in baseball. This alignment provides New York with a significant competitive advantage as they attempt to close the gap on the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East standings.

The Yankees signed Fried to a $218 million contract two winters ago, anticipating his role as the staff ace during Cole’s absence. Cole underwent Tommy John surgery before the 2025 season and returned on May 22, just one week after Fried was placed on the injured list.
