The result extended the second-longest winning-season run in the four major US professional sports leagues. The Yankees’ last losing season was in 1992, when they finished 76–86, while their own record stands at 39 consecutive winning seasons from 1926 to 1964.
But the achievement does not guarantee a playoff berth or division title. New York is 82–62, four games behind American League East leaders Tampa Bay, with 18 regular-season games remaining.
The Yankees lead Boston by three games for the top American League wild-card position and hold the season-series tiebreaker. New York last won the World Series in 2009.
Captain Aaron Judge returned from a broken rib and went 0 for 3 while playing six innings in right field. The club said its focus remains on winning the World Series, with the winning-season streak treated as a measure of consistency rather than an endpoint.
