Yankees retire CC Sabathia’s No. 52 in Monument Park ceremony
The Hall of Famer became the 24th Yankees player or manager to have a number retired, and the fifth member of the 2009 championship team to receive both honours.
The New York Yankees retired CC Sabathia’s No. 52 and unveiled a plaque honouring him in Monument Park before a doubleheader opener against Baltimore on Friday, according to Fox Sports.
Sabathia is the 24th Yankees player or manager to have a number retired. He also became the fifth member of the club’s 2009 World Series-winning team, alongside Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada, to receive both a retired number and a Monument Park plaque.
The left-hander played 11 seasons for New York, from 2009 to 2019, and helped the Yankees win the World Series in his first year with the club. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
The ceremony recognised a career that connected Sabathia’s place in the Yankees’ championship history with his later Hall of Fame standing. The source report says it took place on a Friday but does not specify the calendar date.
