Yankees halt losing streak with victory over Braves in Cy Young matchup
Cole becomes 13th Yankee to reach 1,000 career strikeouts while Chris Sale is ejected after balk call
The New York Yankees ended a two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves, secured by a dominant performance from 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole. Cole pitched seven strong innings, striking out nine batters and allowing two runs to earn his third consecutive win. In doing so, he became the 13th player in franchise history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts, achieving the milestone by retiring Matt Olson to end the fifth inning.
The contest featured a direct matchup between two of Major League Baseball’s premier pitchers, with Cole facing off against Chris Sale. Sale, pitching on nine days’ rest, allowed five hits and three runs over six innings while striking out eight. He fell to 0-3 in his career against Cole, and his outing was marred by a critical error in the fifth inning when he was called for a balk. The call, which resulted in the tiebreaking run for the Yankees, led to the ejection of Braves manager Walt Weiss after he argued the decision with plate umpire Dan Merzel.
Offensive production for New York was driven by rookie Spencer Jones and shortstop George Lombard Jr. Jones contributed significantly in the fifth inning, driving in a run with his first career triple and scoring the go-ahead run on Sale’s balk. Lombard, who had homered in his major league debut on Tuesday, extended his power display with a second career home run in the seventh inning. His blast provided a 4-2 lead that held until the late innings.
The Yankees added insurance in the eighth inning when Ben Rice hit his 32nd home run of the season. However, the Braves threatened late, with Ronald Acuña Jr. homering off reliever Brent Headrick. David Bednar closed out the game, despite allowing an RBI single to Dominic Smith, to secure his 26th save of the season. The victory marked a turnaround for New York, while the Braves suffered their second consecutive loss.
Looking ahead, the teams will resume their series on Sunday with a pitching matchup between Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes, who holds a 7-4 record and a 3.67 earned run average, and New York right-hander Cam Schlittler, who boasts a 10-6 record and a 2.26 ERA.
