The New York Yankees avoided a home sweep against the back-to-back World Series champions, securing a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Manager Aaron Boone highlighted the strategic deployment of five pitchers to contain a high-powered offence, limiting the Dodgers to a single run on four hits. The win leaves the Yankees 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings.
Boone acknowledged the unpredictability of constructing a pitching plan for the night game, noting that the collective effort exceeded expectations. The sequence began with Ryan Yarbrough, who pitched 2.2 scoreless innings as the opener. Boone praised Yarbrough’s efficiency and unique delivery, citing the left-hander’s height, arm angle, and ability to change speeds as factors that created deception for hitters. Yarbrough’s performance allowed the bullpen to leverage the game’s later stages effectively.
Paul Blackburn followed with 2.1 scoreless innings, recording seven outs to maintain the shutout. Brent Headrick then entered the fray, pitching two scoreless frames. Boone commended Headrick for rebounding from early-season struggles, noting that the lefty has not allowed a run in 41 of his 49 relief appearances this season, the highest such streak in Major League Baseball. Headrick’s consistency in his first full-time relief role provided a stable bridge through the top of the order.
The Dodgers managed to break the scoreless streak in the eighth inning when Fernando Cruz surrendered a solo home run. However, Cruz entered the game with runners on first and second, and the situation remained tense. David Bednar was brought in to face Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages. Bednar struck out Ohtani and induced a flyout from Pages, preserving the 1-1 tie. He subsequently recorded the save, extending his scoreless streak to 17 consecutive appearances, with his last run allowed on 18 May.
Jazz Chisholm provided the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Boone emphasised Bednar’s leadership and competitive makeup, describing him as a key figure in the bullpen’s success. The Yankees will look to build on this momentum when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, with Ryan Weathers scheduled to start the series opener.
