Yahoo Sports analysts split on Western Conference Finals as West predicted to dominate NBA title race
With the NBA’s final four set, writers from Yahoo Sports have released their forecasts for the San Antonio Spurs versus Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers versus New York Knicks series, with most predicting a Western Conference championship.

Analysts from Yahoo Sports have published their predictions for the upcoming NBA Conference Finals, outlining matchups between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the West, and the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks in the East. The coverage highlights a divided opinion on the Western Conference series, while a strong consensus emerges regarding the superiority of Western Conference teams heading into the championship round.
Opinions are sharply split on the Spurs-Thunder series, with some analysts favouring San Antonio due to Victor Wembanyama’s defensive impact, while others back the Thunder’s experience and depth. Tom Haberstroh and Kelly Iko predict the Spurs will win, citing Wembanyama’s ability to neutralise Oklahoma City’s shooting efficiency. Conversely, Ben Rohrbach, Dan Titus, and Dan Devine predict the Thunder will win, citing the team’s undefeated 8-0 playoff record, MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and championship experience.
For the Cavaliers-Knicks series, the majority of analysts predict a Knicks victory, citing Cleveland’s fatigue from grueling seven-game series and New York’s rest advantage. Dan Devine, Dan Titus, and Ben Rohrbach predict the Knicks will win, highlighting New York’s offensive rating of 124.8 and defensive rating of 104.8, both second-best in the postseason. Kelly Iko predicts the Cavaliers will win in seven games, arguing that the addition of Max Strus and other players has improved Cleveland’s shot quality to among the top six in basketball.
Several contributors agreed that the Western Conference teams are superior, predicting the Thunder or Spurs would win the championship. Haberstroh notes Jalen Williams’ hamstring injury status will dictate the Finals outcome, while Titus predicts OKC will win back-to-back championships, citing the depth and versatility of Western Conference role players. The Thunder enter as reigning champions with an undefeated 8-0 playoff record, while the MVP award between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama is expected to be presented prior to the first tip-off.
The series between the Thunder and Spurs is scheduled to begin on Monday, marking the most anticipated matchup of the current playoffs. The Thunder, the reigning NBA champions, enter the series as favourites to secure a return to the NBA Finals, carrying an undefeated 8-0 record through two rounds of postseason play. San Antonio arrives with momentum after defeating their previous opponents, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest.
A recent poll conducted by The Athletic among NBA players has identified the Boston Celtics' home arena, TD Garden, as having the most passionate fans in the league. The venue secured 20.5 per cent of the overall vote to take first place, narrowly edging out New York’s Madison Square Garden, which received 19.3 per cent. Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center ranked third with 18 per cent of the vote.
The findings highlight the intense atmosphere surrounding the playoffs, with fans playing a significant role in the league’s narrative. As the conference finals approach, the focus remains on the competitive balance between the Eastern and Western conferences, with analysts largely predicting that the West’s depth and talent will prevail in the final series.
