BBC Radio Newcastle discusses leadership options for 2026-27 season amid squad overhaul

BBC Radio Newcastle has initiated a discussion regarding the appointment of a new captain for Newcastle United’s 2026-27 season, following the reported departure of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. Presenter Lee Hawthorn has identified academy graduate Lewis Miley and longest-serving player Jacob Murphy as the top contenders for the armband.

The debate emerges as the club navigates a transition phase referred to as "Newcastle 2.0," which focuses on younger talent. Miley, a 20-year-old who has risen in the midfield pecking order following the exits of Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, has previously worn the captain's armband to significant approval from supporters.

However, questions remain regarding whether it is too early for the England youth international to assume full leadership responsibilities. There is speculation that manager Jaissle may prefer to allow Miley to develop without the immediate pressure of the captaincy, potentially opting for a more experienced voice to guide the new signings.

Jacob Murphy, the club’s longest-serving player and a long-standing member of the leadership team, is considered a key figure for setting the example. His nine years of loyalty have seen him accumulate significant goal contributions, particularly during the 2024-25 season, making him a seasoned option to help younger players settle.

The discussion also highlights potential tactical shifts that could impact Murphy’s role. With Anthony Gordon’s departure, Harvey Barnes is expected to move to his preferred left-side, creating a positional battle for the right wing between Murphy and Anthony Elanga.

Elanga is viewed by some as a better stylistic fit for Jaissle’s system, though Murphy’s experience remains a valuable asset. The final decision on the captaincy and the right-wing position has not been confirmed, leaving the leadership structure of the 2026-27 squad open for debate.
