Y Combinator-backed Gamgee launches AI-designed mRNA cancer vaccine startup
The startup, which cites a single case of tumour shrinkage in a dog named Rosie, is recruiting for Australian clinical trials and partnering with major research universities.

Paul Conyngham has launched Gamgee, a startup backed by Y Combinator, to develop personalised mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs and humans. The company was established after Conyngham utilised artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT and Grok, to design a vaccine for his dog, Rosie, which reportedly resulted in tumour shrinkage. Gamgee is now seeking to scale this technology, recruiting for clinical trials in Australia and collaborating with the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales.
The startup’s website highlights a roughly 75 per cent tumour reduction in its first documented case, though it cautions that this outcome is based on a single instance. Gamgee promises a finished vaccine in approximately four weeks, a timeline derived from that solitary case, and states the process requires less than 20 minutes of a veterinarian’s time without necessitating new clinical workflows. Current pricing for the treatment has not been disclosed.
Conyngham, who explicitly notes on the company’s website that he is not a biologist, credits the AI-designed intervention with extending Rosie’s life by several years. The Staffordshire bull terrier-Shar Pei mix features prominently in the company’s branding, including its social media presence and an AI-generated anime launch video. Gamgee’s mission extends beyond pets, with plans to harness AI and genetics to develop personalised treatments for a range of diseases and species, including humans.
The scientific context surrounding Rosie’s treatment remains complex. Researchers have previously noted that the broad claims gave artificial intelligence too much credit while minimising human involvement. Furthermore, the protocol Rosie followed involved receiving the mRNA vaccine alongside another therapy, making it difficult to isolate the specific effect of the vaccine on her improvement.
Despite these complexities, the venture has attracted support from the tech incubator Y Combinator. Gamgee is currently recruiting for its first clinical trials in Australia, while maintaining a global waitlist for other regions. Conyngham has encouraged potential funders and study partners to reach out as the company moves forward with its ambitious expansion into human medicine.
