Wright State basketball coach Clint Sargent prioritises culture amid roster overhaul
With organised workouts commencing on June 6, Wright State head coach Clint Sargent outlines a strategy focused on humility and institutional stability in an era of high player turnover.

Wright State University basketball coach Clint Sargent has initiated preparations for the upcoming season, marking a significant shift in the sport’s operational landscape. Organised workouts and meetings commenced on Saturday, June 6, ending what Sargent describes as the diminishing era of a genuine offseason. The new regimen demands a 10-month commitment from athletes, a reality that has fundamentally altered recruitment and retention strategies in collegiate athletics.
Sargent, who played at South Dakota State from 2007 to 2011, noted that the sport’s calendar has progressively consumed more of the year. This extended timeline necessitates a focus on interpersonal cohesion rather than just on-court performance. "It's far more than just the games. You've got to make sure you enjoy the people you're with," Sargent said, emphasising that the coaching staff prioritises recruiting young men capable of sustaining relationships throughout the year.
The Raiders are retaining a core nucleus from their previous 23-win season, which included victories in the regular-season and conference tournaments. Key returnees include junior guard Dom Pangonis, who averaged 8.9 points and hit 37 three-pointers; junior forward Andrea Holden, who recorded 42 blocks; and sophomore forward Kellen Pickett, the Horizon League freshman of the year. Pickett averaged 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds in the final 23 games of the previous campaign.
Despite this stability, the team has undergone significant turnover, replacing nine players from the previous roster. Six departures were transfers, including Michael Cooper to Cal, TJ Burch to Utah, Solomon Callaghan to Utah State, Alex Bruskotter to Cleveland State, Ayden Davis to D-II Ferris State, and Logan Woods, whose status remains undecided. The programme has recruited eight new players, a trend Sargent attributes to the broader instability in collegiate sports, with nearly 5,000 players entering the transfer portal this offseason.
Two redshirt freshmen, guards PJ Douglas and Isaiah Williams, are set to make their debuts this season. Sargent stressed that building a cohesive culture is an absolute necessity for success in this environment. He described the team’s approach as one rooted in humility and a commitment to process rather than immediate results. "We're not necessarily chasing results. We're trying to commit to a process that, I feel like, at the end of it, will produce better young men," he said.
