Wolves dismiss Rob Edwards following Premier League relegation
Technical director Matt Jackson cites need for structural alignment as club targets immediate Championship promotion

Wolverhampton Wanderers have terminated the contract of head coach Rob Edwards, seven months after his appointment, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. The decision marks the end of a brief tenure for the 43-year-old, who recorded only five wins from 30 matches in all competitions, including 16 defeats.
The dismissal comes despite previous assurances from the club’s hierarchy. Technical director Matt Jackson stated last month that the board remained aligned in its support for Edwards, emphasising that internal cohesion was critical for the planned squad rebuild. Jackson noted that while the objective was immediate promotion, significant changes were necessary to achieve that goal.
Edwards, who made more than 100 appearances for the club as a player, had previously managed Middlesbrough, where he left a Championship promotion race. His record at Wolves has drawn sharp criticism, with the former Forest Green Rovers, Watford, and Luton Town boss acknowledging the severity of the situation in a Q&A session with BBC WM last month.
In that interview, Edwards described the club as being “in a mess” and admitted the team was “not good enough,” taking personal responsibility for the poor performance. He stated that he understood his position might be untenable given the circumstances he inherited upon his arrival in November.
Meanwhile, the club has begun preparations for life in the Championship. Wolves have signed Kieran Trippier on a free transfer from Newcastle United and secured the return of striker Raul Jimenez, whose contract with Fulham expires at the end of the month. Cesar Peixoto, who guided Gil Vicente to sixth place in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, has been linked with the vacant head coach position.
