WNBA draft eligibility at the centre of Kanter Freedom ejection

Former NBA centre Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from Sunday night’s WNBA match between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky following a dispute with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. The incident occurred late in the third quarter, with 1:22 remaining on the clock, after Cloud scored inside and the Fever called for a timeout.

At the time of the confrontation, Freedom was seated along the baseline wearing a black shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” Cloud approached the baseline, yelling and pointing in Freedom’s direction. Freedom responded by holding his arms out and taking one step onto the court before security personnel and several Sky players intervened to separate the two.

Freedom was subsequently escorted from the court area, displaying the shirt as he walked toward the lobby. Before departing Wintrust Arena, he spoke with a group of police officers regarding the incident.

The ejection follows declarations this month by Freedom and another former NBA player, Royce White, who stated they identify as women and declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft. The timing of the incident has placed the issue of draft eligibility at the forefront of the game’s narrative.

The match was part of a rivalry that has seen heightened tension recently, including a previous ejection of Sky guard DiJonai Carrington for a flagrant foul. That earlier incident led to social media controversy, with Carrington posting the phrase “white privilege” after the game.

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has also recently defended her players amid broader controversy involving the team, asserting she would always stand by her squad. The latest ejection adds another layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding the WNBA’s draft eligibility rules and on-court conduct.
