Wizards secure No. 1 pick in 2026 NBA draft lottery; Jazz fined for tanking
The draw in Chicago saw the Jazz move up to second place, followed by the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls, as the NBA prepares to vote on new measures to curb tanking efforts.
The Washington Wizards have secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft lottery, concluding a seven-year period in which the franchise failed to win the draw under the current system. The team, which finished the regular season with a league-worst record of 17–65, emerged as the top selection during the proceedings held in Chicago on Sunday.
Following the Wizards, the Utah Jazz were selected second, marking the first time in franchise history that the club has secured a top-two selection. The Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls were subsequently chosen third and fourth, respectively. The draw also determined that the Indiana Pacers' pick was awarded to the LA Clippers, a consequence of a trade deadline deal that saw Indiana acquire centre Ivica Zubac.
In the aftermath of the selection, the NBA imposed a $500,000 fine on the Utah Jazz for conduct detrimental to the league regarding their tanking efforts. Despite this penalty, the Jazz advanced to the second pick, a result that has drawn scrutiny given the league's ongoing attempts to discourage deliberate losing to improve lottery odds.
The Wizards, who made significant trades during the season to acquire All-Stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, are now positioned to select from a deep pool of talent. The top prospects identified for the No. 1 pick include BYU forward AJ Dybantsa and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, with Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson expected to be selected in the top four.
The Indiana Pacers' acquisition of the pick from the Clippers comes with specific contractual stipulations. As part of the agreement, Indiana will receive its 2031 draft selection back, having retained their 2026 pick only on the condition that it moved into the top four spots in the lottery.
With the lottery concluded, attention shifts to the upcoming draft class, which is considered a banner year featuring multiple high-scoring forwards and promising guards. The NBA is expected to vote later this month on new measures to further curb the effectiveness of tanking, following a season in which nearly a third of the league attempted to lose games to secure better odds.
