Wizards conclude Dybantsa’s Summer League stint after two games

The Washington Wizards have concluded rookie AJ Dybantsa’s involvement in the NBA Summer League after just two games. Associate head coach T.J. Sorrentine confirmed the decision to The Athletic on Tuesday, citing standard workload management protocols for high-profile prospects.

Dybantsa, selected as the number one overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft following a one-and-done season at BYU, averaged 25 points, seven rebounds, and two assists across his limited appearances. He recorded 27 points in his debut and added 23 points and seven rebounds in a victory over Sacramento, shooting 13-of-33 from the field.

The move mirrors a strategic pattern observed with previous top draft selections. Last year’s number one pick, Cooper Flagg, played only two games for the Dallas Mavericks before concluding his Summer League campaign. Similarly, Victor Wembanyama, now a star with the San Antonio Spurs, was also limited to two games during his rookie Summer League appearance in 2023.

While Dybantsa’s field goal efficiency was modest, his ability to drive to the basket and draw fouls was noted as a key strength during his brief tenure in Las Vegas. His performance, which included tying the record for points by a debuting number one pick, provided a glimpse of the talent the franchise expects to develop.

Teammates Will Riley and Tre Johnson will also conclude their Summer League participation with the Wizards. The decision to limit minutes for top prospects is a common practice within the league, designed to preserve player health and manage fatigue ahead of the regular season.
