Wisconsin Democrats Select Crowley in Narrow Primary Victory Over Progressive Challenger
Crowley, seeking to become Wisconsin’s first Black governor, now faces Republican incumbent Tom Tiffany in the general election after a chaotic primary season marked by late withdrawals and administrative delays.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has secured the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial nomination in a razor-thin victory over democratic socialist Francesca Hong, a result that underscores the ongoing tension between the party’s establishment and its progressive wing. Declared the winner by the Associated Press following Hong’s concession, Crowley’s margin of less than one percentage point signals a decisive preference for electability over ideological insurgency in a state critical to the 2026 midterm elections.
Crowley, who aims to become Wisconsin’s first Black governor, positioned himself as the candidate best equipped to unseat Republican incumbent Tom Tiffany, who holds the endorsement of President Donald Trump. His campaign emphasised unity and broad appeal, with campaign manager Garren Randolph stating that Crowley is now focused on bringing together Democrats, Republicans, and independents to deliver results. This strategy appears to have resonated with voters wary of the progressive movement’s recent successes in neighbouring states, which party leaders fear may struggle against conservative incumbents in purple states.
Hong’s campaign, which sought to capitalise on the momentum of progressive victories such as Abdul El-Sayed’s win in Michigan’s US Senate primary, fell short of replicating that success. Although Hong conceded the race, her team highlighted the narrow margin as evidence of significant voter angst within the Democratic base. Campaign manager Becky Cooper described the effort as a meaningful contribution to the progressive movement, noting that the team campaigned cleanly and maintained their integrity despite the loss.
The primary was characterised by a series of high-profile withdrawals and administrative complications that delayed the final outcome. Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes exited the race less than two weeks before the election amid questions regarding inappropriate behaviour, while Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez dropped out in July following a campaign finance scandal. Additionally, the reporting of approximately 28,000 absentee ballots from Milwaukee was delayed until early Wednesday morning due to a human error in data uploading, extending the period of uncertainty for voters and candidates alike.
Crowley’s path to the nomination was further complicated by his own brief withdrawal in early July, from which he returned with the endorsement of outgoing Governor Tony Evers. The race also drew national attention, though prominent progressive leaders such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez chose not to endorse any candidate. As Crowley prepares to face Tiffany, the result serves as a cautionary tale for the progressive movement, demonstrating the challenges of translating ideological enthusiasm into electoral victory in a swing state where moderate and independent voters often determine the outcome.
