WIRED updates 2026 Android phone buying guide with Pixel, Galaxy and Fairphone picks
WIRED’s September guide highlights phones from Google, Samsung, Motorola and Fairphone after testing models for performance, cameras, battery life and software support.
WIRED has updated its 2026 guide to the best Android phones, highlighting models including Google’s Pixel 10a and Pixel 11 series, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8, Motorola’s Razr Ultra (2026) and Fairphone’s Gen. 6+.
The guide is based on testing that typically runs for one to three weeks. WIRED says its reviews assess performance, thermals, call quality, cameras and battery life, alongside considerations such as displays, processors, cooling, charging and connectivity.
WIRED describes the Pixel 10a as a strong option below US$500, citing its performance, 120-Hz display, camera system and all-day battery life. The Pixel 11 range is presented as a step up, with a more powerful processor, additional camera capabilities and native Qi2 wireless charging support.
For demanding users, WIRED singles out Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, whose hardware-level Privacy Display is designed to limit visibility from nearby viewers. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is highlighted for its revised book-style design, larger usable screen and relatively light 201-gram build, although the foldable remains expensive.
Motorola’s Razr Ultra 2026 is noted for its compact folding design and 5,000-mAh silicon-carbon battery, while Fairphone’s Gen. 6+ is positioned around repairability. The device has 12 replaceable parts, includes a screwdriver and is sold in the US for the first time. Fairphone promises software updates through 2033.
The guide also discusses alternatives from Nothing, Samsung and Motorola. WIRED recommends buying unlocked where possible and notes that major sales periods can lower prices, while advising buyers to weigh software support, cameras, battery life and specific hardware needs.
