Wigan Warriors have moved to the top of the Betfred Super League table after securing a club-record 12th consecutive victory over Wakefield Trinity. The 26-12 win at the Brick Community Stadium extended Wigan’s unbeaten home record against their rivals to 11 matches, marking a significant shift in the league’s upper echelons.
The victory places immediate pressure on long-time leaders Leeds Rhinos, who are scheduled to face York on Sunday. As reported by Sky Sports, the manner of Wigan’s move into pole position is viewed as a strong statement of intent for the remainder of the season. Wakefield Trinity, meanwhile, suffered their fourth straight defeat despite a spirited second-half effort that saw them narrow the deficit before a decisive interception sealed the result.
In the lower reaches of the table, Leigh Leopards continued their push for a play-off spot with a 62-10 defeat of Bradford Bulls. Adam Cook was instrumental in the performance, scoring 30 points with 11 kicks and two tries. The result marks a fourth consecutive win for Leigh, who defeated Leeds Rhinos in the previous round, further solidifying their position in the race for post-season football.
Leigh head coach Adrian Lam praised his team’s second-half performance, describing it as “unbelievable” and noting the confidence gained from their previous victory. “Cook kicking at 100 per cent certainly helps,” Lam told Sky Sports. “He’s been under pressure during the season at times but a nice week for him to find his form.”
The heavy defeat saw the injury-hit Bradford Bulls slump to the bottom of the Super League table. Head coach Kurt Haggerty acknowledged the difficulty of the match, stating that while his team competed for the first 40 minutes, defensive lapses in the second half proved costly. Haggerty emphasised the need to avoid self-pity, highlighting the upcoming schedule as an opportunity to keep “scrapping” for points.
