Widow’s Bay Leads a Women-Driven Comedy Showcase at the 2026 Emmys

Widow’s Bay emerged as the major comedy winner at the 2026 Emmys, taking best comedy series and comedy writing for Katie Dippold. Kate O’Flynn also won supporting actress in a comedy for her performance as Patricia.

Hacks, which has completed its fifth and final season, claimed a defining moment of its own. Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy for the fifth time, becoming, according to The Guardian, the first woman to win the category for every season of a multi-season show.

Smart’s performance as Deborah Vance was central to Hacks’ appeal across its run, while Widow’s Bay made an immediate impression with its first season and distinctive comedic and spooky tone. The result placed two women-driven comedies at the centre of the ceremony’s conversation.

The Guardian also cited Abbott Elementary as another example of women-led comedy receiving Emmy recognition. Together, the shows reflected the creative possibilities that emerge when women are given greater influence over television comedy.

The awards also pointed towards what comes next. Paul W Downs has discussed moving on from Hacks to a limited series with a tonal shift, while Widow’s Bay season two was reportedly due to begin shooting in March.
