‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Pitt’ take top honours at 2026 Emmys
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards recognised the two series with the night’s leading comedy and drama prizes, while Jean Smart and Rhea Seehorn secured acting honours.
‘Widow’s Bay’ won best comedy series and ‘The Pitt’ took best drama series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, according to Al Jazeera.
The comedy-horror series, set in a cursed New England town, overcame the previous season’s winner, ‘Hacks’. Matthew Rhys, who stars in ‘Widow’s Bay’, was reported as the first performer to win two lead acting honours at the same ceremony. Stephen Root also won best supporting actor in a comedy for the series.
Jean Smart won her fifth Emmy for playing Deborah Vance in ‘Hacks’. With eight Emmys overall, Smart became the first lead comedy actress to win the award for every season of one show, according to the source. Julia Louis-Dreyfus previously won the honour in six of ‘Veep’s’ seven seasons.
‘The Pitt’ secured its second consecutive best drama series Emmy. Noah Wyle also won his second straight best lead drama actor award for his role as Dr Robby Robinavitch in the emergency department drama.
Rhea Seehorn won best actress in a drama for ‘Pluribus’, while its creator, Vince Gilligan, won best drama writing. ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ won best variety series after its farewell season, taking six Emmys overall.
CBS said financial pressures led to the programme’s cancellation. Colbert rejected that explanation and alleged that network executives had bowed to pressure from US President Donald Trump over the programme’s mockery of his administration.
