WHO modelling suggests DR Congo Ebola outbreak is significantly larger than official toll

The World Health Organization stated on Tuesday that the true scale of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is likely far greater than the official tally, with modelling suggesting the actual number of cases could be two to four times higher than reported.

Chikwe Ihekweazu, the WHO emergencies director, provided the assessment, noting that while official data records nearly 2,000 infections and over 700 deaths since the outbreak was detected in mid-May, the "scale of the outbreak is at least two to four times the number of cases that we have found".

The discrepancy highlights the challenges in tracking the haemorrhagic fever as it spreads across multiple provinces. The WHO’s estimate is based on modelling rather than confirmed case counts, indicating a range of possibility rather than a definitive fact regarding the exact magnitude of the undercounting.

The outbreak has already impacted broader social structures within the region. The Democratic Republic of Congo national football team recently arrived in the United States for the World Cup after completing a mandatory 21-day quarantine required by US authorities. This marks the team’s first appearance in the tournament since 1974.

Coach Sebastien Desabre expressed hope that the squad’s performance would lift the spirits of supporters back home, even as the health crisis continues to evolve. The reliance on WHO modelling to gauge the outbreak's extent underscores the uncertainty surrounding the reliability of official case reporting in the region.
