Whittingham Keeps Underwood as Michigan Quarterback, But Warns Role Is Unsettled

Bryce Underwood remains Michigan’s quarterback for now, though coach Kyle Whittingham has made clear the role is not guaranteed.

Speaking after Underwood’s difficult Week 1 performance against Western Michigan, Whittingham said the sophomore must “turn the corner” and show improvement. He added that no player’s position is permanently secure and that performance from week to week would determine who plays.

Underwood was reported to have completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also lost a fumble that, according to the source report, could have been decisive.

Pro Football Focus reportedly credited Underwood with five turnover-worthy plays and no big-time throws. The figures add to scrutiny of a quarterback whose freshman season included 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Pressure is also building for Tommy Carr to receive an opportunity. Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, has reportedly continued working on his development and preparing for a chance to play.

Whittingham has previously praised Underwood’s work in pre-season practice, but the coach’s latest comments place the emphasis on translating that form into consistent game performances. For now, however, Underwood has not been benched.
