White Sox call up Jacob Gonzalez as Murakami sidelined with hamstring strain
Manager Will Venable expects star slugger to miss approximately two weeks, prompting roster adjustment as Chicago maintains second AL wild card position.

The Chicago White Sox have activated infield prospect Jacob Gonzalez from Triple-A to replace Munetaka Murakami, who suffered a right hamstring strain during Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. Manager Will Venable indicated that the star slugger is expected to be sidelined for approximately two weeks, though an official diagnosis remains pending further imaging.
Murakami exited the contest in the third inning after running hard to beat out a double play ball. He went 0 for 2 in Friday’s game and currently leads the American League with 20 home runs in 246 plate appearances. His absence leaves a significant void in the lineup, particularly given his slash line of .240/.378/.560 and the fact that the rest of Chicago’s left-handed batters have combined for only 24 home runs in 987 plate appearances this season.
Gonzalez, selected 15th overall in the 2023 draft, enters the major leagues following a breakout performance in the minors. He is hitting .317/.419/.668 with 19 home runs in 52 Triple-A games this year, a marked improvement from his career minor league average of .232/.310/.335. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 23 prospect in Chicago’s system in May, noting that he projects as a versatile backup infielder.
The roster move comes immediately after a 4-3 victory over the Tigers at Rate Field, secured by a walk-off home run from Miguel Vargas in the 10th inning. The win improved the White Sox record to 30-27, maintaining their position in the second American League wild card spot with a three-game lead on a postseason berth.
Despite the victory, the team faces a strategic challenge with Murakami’s potential absence. Signed to a two-year, $34 million contract in December, the 26-year-old slugger brings a history of power production, including a record 56 home runs in Japan in 2022. The step down to Gonzalez represents a substantial shift in offensive capability as Chicago looks to sustain its momentum against the Cleveland Guardians.
