Boston Celtics Derrick White on the challenge of guarding Victor Wembanyama
Celtics guard outlines defensive dilemmas posed by Spurs centre ahead of hypothetical 2026 Finals matchup

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has identified the primary challenge in defending San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama as the player’s unprecedented combination of size and perimeter shooting ability. Speaking on the 'Run it Back' podcast, White suggested that traditional defensive strategies struggle to contain a player who can dominate both in the paint and from the outside.

White, who has guarded Wembanyama on several occasions with limited success despite the significant height disparity, argued that physicality is the most effective countermeasure. He noted that the Spurs star represents a unique problem for defenders, as conventional matchups fail to account for his specific skill set. "I think you want to be physical," White stated, "but we've never really seen someone that is that size that can handle, can shoot from the perimeter."

The defensive dilemma, according to White, lies in the mismatch created by Wembanyama’s versatility. If a team employs a larger defender, the Spurs centre can drive to the perimeter and shoot over them. Conversely, if a smaller defender is used, Wembanyama can utilise his height to shoot over the top or drive past the opponent. White described the Frenchman as "one of a kind," highlighting the difficulty in finding a consistent defensive assignment.

Looking ahead to the 2026 NBA Finals, White offered speculation on how the New York Knicks might approach guarding Wembanyama. He suggested that Karl-Anthony Towns could start against the Spurs centre, with OG Anunoby receiving significant playing time in a defensive role. White acknowledged that these players would face considerable challenges in neutralising Wembanyama’s impact.

While White’s comments regarding the Knicks’ potential strategy are speculative, his assessment of the defensive requirements remains grounded in his direct experience against the Spurs star. He maintained that being physical is the solution to guarding any star player, a principle he believes all teams will attempt to implement against Wembanyama in high-stakes matchups.
