White House Announces $25 Billion Coast Guard Fleet Modernisation

The White House has issued a statement marking the 236th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard, framing the service as a critical component of national security and law enforcement. The presidential message characterised the Coast Guard as a force of maritime first responders that guards US shores, waters, and economic shipping lanes against narco-terrorist cartels and drug smugglers.

Central to the announcement was a declaration of a $25 billion investment attributed to The Working Families Tax Cuts Act. The administration stated this funding is designated to rebuild the Coast Guard’s fleet, which it described as having decayed under previous leadership. The modernisation plan includes the procurement of 21 new cutters, 40 search and rescue helicopters, and 17 state-of-the-art icebreakers.

The President noted that these assets will expand the service’s operational reach from the Caribbean to the Arctic. In the statement, the administration highlighted the Coast Guard’s role in seizing hundreds of billions of dollars in narcotics, positioning the fleet upgrades as essential to maintaining maritime dominance and preventing illegal substances from reaching American shores.

Beyond hardware, the message addressed personnel welfare and recruitment. The President cited a $2,000 "Devotion to Duty" payment issued to Coast Guard members last December to recognise their service. Additionally, the administration reported that recruiting numbers have reached their highest levels in a generation, attributing this increase to current policy frameworks.

Founded in 1790 under Alexander Hamilton, the Coast Guard is described in the statement as the oldest unbroken tradition of American valor upon the sea. The presidential message concluded by pledging continued support for the service, asserting that the institution is operating with renewed confidence and spirit under the current administration.
