What LiDAR does on an iPhone Pro
Apple’s LiDAR scanner adds depth sensing to supported Pro models, powering augmented reality, room scanning, photography, measuring and accessibility features.

LiDAR on supported iPhone Pro models measures the distance and shape of nearby surfaces using pulses of invisible light. Engadget explains that the sensor works alongside the camera, which captures visual information while LiDAR supplies depth data.
There is no dedicated LiDAR app or Settings toggle. Compatible iOS features and applications activate the scanner automatically when depth information is required.
Apple’s ARKit framework can use LiDAR readings to map floors, walls and other surfaces for augmented reality applications. RoomPlan combines camera and LiDAR data to identify features including walls, windows, doors and furniture when creating a 3D model of an interior.
The sensor also supports Night mode portraits and faster autofocus in low light on compatible Pro models. In the Measure app, LiDAR-equipped iPhones gain features such as automatic edge guides, Ruler view and the ability to estimate a fully visible person’s height.
Apple introduced LiDAR with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020. The feature has remained limited to Pro and Pro Max models, while every fourth-generation iPad Pro and later is described as having the sensor.
Measure readings are approximate and should not be treated as exact dimensions. LiDAR-equipped iPhones can also use Detection Mode in the Magnifier app to identify nearby people, doors and furniture through sound, speech or haptic feedback, but Apple warns it should not be relied on for navigation or safety-critical situations.
