Western Michigan accepts disputed clock ruling and will not appeal Michigan loss
The Broncos accepted the Big Ten and Mid-American Conference explanation for the decision that restored one second during Michigan’s 13–12 win.
Western Michigan will not appeal its 13–12 loss to Michigan after officials restored one second to the clock during a controversial replay review.
The decision followed an incomplete last-second Hail Mary attempt. The Big Ten said its replay showed Western Michigan defender Micah Davis made contact with the ball while one second remained, allowing another play to be awarded.
The conference also attributed the difference between the replay clock and the clock shown on NBC’s broadcast to camera alignment procedures used before kick-off. The Big Ten has maintained that the ruling was correct.
Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna said he found nothing unfair or improper after speaking with Big Ten officials, including commissioner Tony Petitti. He described the discrepancy as a difference between what viewers saw and what replay officials reviewed.
Coach Lance Taylor said officials did not cost the Broncos the game. The Mid-American Conference said the Big Ten provided video and audio supporting its explanation after Western Michigan sought clarification.
