West Bank movement turns on fast-changing checkpoint updates

Travel across the occupied West Bank has become dependent on rapidly changing information about Israeli military checkpoints, road closures, raids and reported attacks by settlers. Palestinians use WhatsApp and Telegram groups to share warnings, while Basma FM broadcasts regular updates from its station near Ramallah.

The station provides three traffic updates an hour, with its team monitoring conditions at 61 checkpoints. During one bulletin, 12 checkpoints were reported to be closed or experiencing long queues. Basma FM staff said conditions could change within minutes and that information was checked with sources before broadcast.

Basma FM began broadcasting on 2 October 2023 with a focus on entertainment and cultural programming. After the Gaza war began, it shifted towards reporting on roadblocks and movement conditions, as restrictions affected Palestinians travelling to work, schools, hospitals and neighbouring communities.

Al Jazeera reported accounts from Palestinians who described fear, alleged assaults and weapons being pointed at them near checkpoints. Those individual accounts, as well as reports of settler attacks and checkpoint incidents, were not independently verified in the supplied material.

The scale of the movement system is reflected in figures from the United Nations humanitarian affairs agency, OCHA, which recorded 925 barriers across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in December 2025. The figure was reported as 43 per cent above the 20-year annual average.

An Israeli human rights organisation, B’Tselem, has characterised checkpoints and roadblocks as part of a broader policy of fragmentation in the West Bank. For Palestinians relying on Basma FM, however, the immediate concern remains whether a route is open — and whether that information will still be accurate by the time they reach it.
