Wellington’s 26-0 shutout over Westwood highlights long-term development gap
The Wolverines’ dominant road victory marks their first shutout since 2024, while Westwood’s coach cites physical development as the key hurdle for his program.
Wellington High School extended its unbeaten start to the season with a 26-0 victory over Westwood Academy on 3 September, securing the Wolverines’ first shutout since 2024. The match, played at Calvin R. Triplett Field at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce, pitted two previously unbeaten teams against each other, with Wellington improving to a 3-0 record and Westwood falling to 2-1.
The game’s defining moment came early in the first quarter. Following a short punt that placed the Wolverines on the Westwood 29-yard line, sophomore running back Jay’lan Tyler opened the scoring with a 29-yard rush. Tyler finished the night with 117 rushing yards, anchoring Wellington’s offensive output.
Westwood’s defence remained competitive for the first 21 minutes and 36 seconds, with senior Jakeim Ellison recording two interceptions. However, Wellington’s special teams and secondary capitalised on turnovers to build a decisive lead. Junior kicker Evan Holowecky converted a 41-yard field goal as the first half expired, giving the visitors a 10-0 advantage at the break.
The second half saw the gap widen rapidly. Holowecky added a 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, before junior Rhys Lewis returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown. Westwood fumbled the ensuing kickoff, allowing junior Elijah Thomas to score from the two-yard line, resulting in two Wellington scores within 19 seconds.
Westwood head coach LaDaris Vann attributed the result to the program’s ongoing physical development rather than tactical failure. In his second season, Vann has emphasised weight room training during the spring and summer, noting that the team is “not strong enough” yet. “It takes years and years and years of being at a program to get that situation taken care of,” Vann said, adding that the team needs to continue to “stack the weight days.”
The loss ended Westwood’s pursuit of a 3-0 start, a feat the Panthers last achieved in 2023. Despite the shutout, Vann acknowledged his defence’s performance, particularly the pass breakups by Ellison, senior Angelo Cyrius, and junior Sereal Townsend. The Panthers had scored 61 points in their first two games of the campaign, a stark contrast to their offensive struggles against Wellington.
