Weather delays compress ATP Montreal Masters into single day of quarter-finals
The ATP has rescheduled all remaining quarter-final matches to Tuesday following evening rain and lightning threats that disrupted Monday’s play at the 12-day event.
Evening rain and the threat of lightning forced the postponement of the first two quarter-final matches at the ATP Montreal Masters on Monday, compressing the remainder of the tournament’s knockout stage into a single day. The matches between Spain’s Rafael Jodar and France’s Arthur Fils, and Italy’s Luciano Darderi and the United States’ Brandon Nakashima, have been rescheduled for Tuesday.
The decision to move the remaining quarter-finals to Tuesday follows significant weather interruptions that have plagued the 12-day event. Play was previously washed out on the ninth day of the tournament, which has drawn criticism for its excessive length and duration that rivals that of a Grand Slam. The ATP Montreal Masters is now set to conclude with the final on Thursday.
The compressed schedule means all four quarter-final matches will take place on Tuesday. In addition to the rescheduled ties, defending champion Ben Shelton, the fifth seed from the United States, will face Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik. Spain’s Daniel Merida is also scheduled to play against American Learner Tien in the other quarter-final on the same day.
The tournament’s conclusion on Thursday creates a scheduling overlap with the start of the Cincinnati Masters. The Cincinnati event is the final major tournament before the US Open, and the proximity of the two events has contributed to descriptions of the Montreal Masters as “oddly scheduled.”
The weather-related disruptions highlight ongoing logistical challenges for the ATP’s hard-court swing. With the Montreal final occurring just days before the Cincinnati Masters begins, the tight turnaround leaves little margin for further weather-induced delays in the lead-up to the final Grand Slam of the year.
