Washington Commanders install new coordinators to reset culture following 2026 draft
The organisation has appointed David Blough as offensive coordinator and Daronte Jones as defensive coordinator, marking a decisive shift in leadership structure aimed at restoring the team's competitive edge.
Following the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, Washington Commanders General Manager Adam Peters has confirmed that new coordinators David Blough and Daronte Jones have officially taken the lead. Peters expressed that the organisation is thrilled with the appointments, noting that the incoming schemes are designed to align with the desired culture established by head coach Dan Quinn.
The strategic move comes after the team parted ways with previous coordinators Joe Whitt Jr and Kliff Kingsbury immediately following a 5-12 season. Peters indicated that the departure was necessary because the team had lost an edge in how it was run and played, specifically regarding play style and competition. Whitt had notably been stripped of playcalling duties during that campaign before both were moved on.
Peters emphasised that the new coaching staff, alongside Quinn, are currently establishing a competitive environment during the offseason program at Ashburn facilities. The focus remains on ensuring that the new coordinators set the tone, communicate effectively, and lead the organisation into the culture Quinn wants to see.
During a discussion on NFL Network's The Insiders, Peters highlighted that the new coordinators have had an incredible offseason and appear physically ready to implement their strategies. He noted that the team is emphasising competition across all areas, including football, weight lifting, and running, to ensure players are competing right away upon their return.
While Peters insisted on Quinn's continued role in setting the thermostat for the team, the immediate priority is the implementation of the new offensive and defensive schemes. The management is looking forward to seeing these coordinators get out on the field, whether in Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the program, to observe the players competing under the new leadership.
The appointment marks a significant period of change in Ashburn as the Commanders seek to reunite with a group of players who embody the specific identity and competitive spirit the franchise aims to project moving forward.
