Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year contract to remain as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, concluding three weeks of deliberation with franchise leadership. The partnership continues into his 13th season, securing his position as the NBA's highest-paid coach with an annual salary of $17.5 million.
The decision to retain Kerr was made by owner Joe Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy, and star player Steph Curry, who prioritised keeping the coach over exploring replacements. This move occurred despite a disappointing 37-45 season that saw the team eliminated from the play-in tournament.
Discussions between Kerr, Lacob, and Dunleavy focused on offensive philosophy, roster outlook, and the franchise's long-term direction. While Kerr had hinted at a potential departure in October, management never truly desired a split, viewing the retention as the best basketball decision for the organisation.
Kerr was hired in May 2014 to implement a new offensive scheme and leadership style, a move initially viewed controversially by owner Joe Lacob. Under his tenure, the Warriors have won four NBA titles, making him one of only six coaches in history with at least four championships.
The franchise now intends to be aggressive in the upcoming transaction season, utilising free agency and trades to improve the roster for a playoff spot. Steph Curry is expected to enter extension conversations later this summer as the team looks to rebuild around its core.
